Cognitive Testing (IQ)
Get StartedIntelligence Quotient (IQ) Testing
Cognitive testing, commonly referred to as Intelligence Quotient (IQ) testing, is used to assess general cognitive abilities. IQ testing measures an individual’s intelligence relative to others of the same age group. This test can be performed at any age including adults.
The test typically takes 1-2 hours to administer, depending on the individual. ABC Testing Services recommends scheduling the test during a time when you are most alert. Ensure you get ample rest before the test, have a nutritious meal, and ensure you are feeling well. It’s important not to place excessive pressure on the test itself; instead, we encourage you to simply do their best.
A standard score below 70 indicates Intellectual Disability (InD), which is characterized by the onset during the developmental period and involves both intellectual and adaptive functioning deficits.
The severity levels of Intellectual Disability include:
Mild IQ 55-70
Moderate IQ 40-55
Severe IQ 25-40
Profound IQ Less Than 25
Average and Gifted IQ Levels:
Average Intelligence IQ 90-109
Above Average and/or Gifted IQ 130+
Gifted Testing
A person who scores 130 or higher on a standardized IQ test (Plan A) may be considered Gifted depending on the county and program or a score at or above 112 on a standardized IQ test (Plan B). Plan B was developed to increase the participation of students from under-represented groups in programs for the gifted, such as Limited English Proficient and/or low socioeconomic families. A special “matrix” may be utilized, giving different weight to the various gifted criteria. Ultimately, the decision for placement is determined within the school and is dependent on several factors.
